Aboriginal Education
At Bonnet Bay Public School, we are deeply committed to Aboriginal Education. Our students engage with Aboriginal histories and cultures through the curriculum, particularly within the new 2026 Aboriginal Histories and Cultures outcomes, integrated into the Key Learning Area of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE). Each term, staff and students participate in meaningful cultural activities and strengthen connections with our local community. Our Koori students made a significant impact by collaborating in the design of our new school logo and visual identity, which was proudly celebrated and launched in March 2025. This project was undertaken in partnership with local Aboriginal artist Amy Hill.
We value the involvement of our Aboriginal families, who join us quarterly for a “Coffee and Yarn” gathering, providing valuable input on how best to support our students. In 2025, we proudly established the Walk for Reconciliation on National Sorry Day, 25th May, welcoming over 600 students from both primary and high schools. This important event continues to grow with the ongoing support of the Bonnet Bay P&C Association and our community partners, including Kari and Kurranulla, as we move into 2026.
Community Connections
At Bonnet Bay Public School, we actively collaborate with a diverse range of community partners to deepen our understanding of local Aboriginal history and culture. We greatly value the support and expertise of organisations such as Kari, Kurranulla, the Menai High School Dance Group, Sutherland Shire Council, and many others. These partnerships are essential in providing authentic cultural experiences, educational resources, and meaningful opportunities for our students and staff to engage respectfully with Aboriginal heritage. Through their guidance and ongoing involvement, we are able to foster a stronger connection to Country, celebrate cultural diversity, and promote reconciliation within our school community. We are committed to nurturing these relationships as they play a vital role in enriching our students’ learning and developing a shared respect for the rich traditions of the First Nations peoples.
