Year 6 to 7 Transition
Starting high school is a significant and exciting milestone for both students and their families. The transition from Year 6 to Year 7 marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities for growth, independence, and learning. While this change can sometimes feel overwhelming, our priority is to ensure that every student feels welcomed, confident, and fully supported throughout the journey.
We are committed to creating a positive and inclusive transition experience that helps students build strong connections, develop a sense of belonging, and settle comfortably into their new environment. Through guidance, encouragement, and ongoing support, we work closely with students and families to make the move to high school a smooth, enjoyable, and successful experience.

What to expect in high school
High school brings new experiences and routines, including:
-
a larger school with more subjects, teachers and classrooms
-
a timetable with different lessons each day
-
moving between classrooms and carrying books and equipment
-
more independence and responsibility for homework and study
-
new friendships and opportunities to join activities and clubs.
Before your child starts Year 7
Before your child begins high school, it is recommended that families visit their local high school, such as The Jannali High School, to become familiar with the school environment and transition processes. As part of the enrolment and transition process, families may also be invited to meet with the Principal or relevant staff members.
This meeting provides an important opportunity to share information that will help the school support your child’s successful start to high school. Families are encouraged to discuss:
- any medical conditions, health concerns, or allergies
- family circumstances that may impact your child’s transition or wellbeing
- individual learning needs, support requirements, or wellbeing considerations
- strategies or adjustments that may help your child feel safe, confident, and supported at school.
Open communication between families and the school helps build strong partnerships and ensures that every student is given the best possible support as they begin their high school journey.
Transition programs to High School
Transition to high school programs help Year 6 students get ready for Year 7. Activities may include:
- orientation days and school tours
- parent information sessions and meet the teacher events
- Year 5 Taste of High School Tour Days
- peer support activities with older students.
Students, parents and carers can join these sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. If you need an interpreter, let the school know.
Getting ready at home
You can help your child prepare by:
- talking positively about starting high school
- buying uniforms, shoes, stationery and school supplies
- checking if a laptop or device is needed
- practising their travel route to school
- making sure they know your phone number and emergency contacts
- encouraging routines such as packing their school bag
