Student Leadership
At Bonnet Bay Public School, student leadership is a valuable avenue for our students to actively engage in shaping the direction of our community. We empower our students to embrace leadership roles, fostering the growth of their own leadership abilities. By doing so, they not only become exemplary role models for their peers but also contribute to the responsible and dedicated service of their school and fellow students.
Our student leadership team will consist of:

School Captains and Vice-Captains
Nomination Process
- Interested Year 5 students will self-nominate to be a school captain or vice-captain.
- They will create a poster and prepare a 2-minute speech. To assist them in this process, please refer to the guidelines and timeline at the end of this document.
- Students in Kindergarten – Year Five will participate in a confidential vote in Term 4.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate school assemblies and special presentations.
- Generate ideas for new initiatives or improvements and help to drive these within the school.
- Represent the student body at formal occasions both within and outside the school, such as ANZAC Day.
- Attend and coordinate regular meetings as active participants of the Student Representative Council.
- Be an outstanding role model to all students in both the classroom and the playground.
- Exhibit leadership in all school activities and events e.g. Sport Carnivals, Education Week showcases.
- Represent the student body when welcoming and thanking special guests and visitors.
- Write and deliver speeches to present at school assemblies and events.
Sport House Captains
Once our school captains and vice captains have been decided, it's time to determine our dedicated sport captains.
Nomination Process
Nomination Process (to be held at the beginning of Term One, once school captain elections have been finalised):
- Interested Year 5 students will self-nominate.
- They will need to create a short one-minute speech, providing evidence of their:
- Active involvement in school sporting programs and representation.
- Commitment to upholding the school's values.
- Demonstrated leadership in adhering to the school's sport Code of Conduct.
- Students in Kindergarten through to Year Five from each House will participate in a confidential vote.
Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with all House Captains.
- Caring for and maintaining sport equipment, including bringing out and packing away playground sport equipment and ensuring the sport storeroom remains organised and tidy.
- Lead your sport house by demonstrating skills in teamwork and participation in Sport Carnivals and activities.
- Assist staff in the running of Sport Carnivals, encouraging student involvement in events and war cries.
- Organise and run sporting events as part of K - 6 Gala Days and events at school.
- Be an outstanding role model to all students within the school.
Technology Team
Students in Year Six can self-nominate for the position of Technology Team through a written application. Applications will include the student’s reasons for wanting to hold a position on the Technology Team and how they believe they can contribute to assisting the technology initiatives and innovation efforts.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the coordination of school assemblies and events that involve technology presentations or demonstrations.
- Organise and set up technology resources, including audio-visual equipment, during lunchtime before assemblies to ensure smooth presentations.
- Provide technical support to both teachers and students when needed, assisting with troubleshooting and technology-related questions.
- Explore opportunities to introduce and organise lunchtime initiatives such as coding clubs or robotics workshops to encourage students' interest and proficiency in technology.
Library Monitors ‘BBPS Bookworms’
Students in Years 3 - 6 can self-nominate for the position of ‘Library Monitors’ through a written application. Applications should include the student’s reason for wanting to hold the position of library monitor and how they believe they can contribute to assisting library staff. Our librarian will select students to be on our BBPS Bookworms leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Provide support to the librarian in various library-related tasks.
- Organise and lead engaging lunchtime activities in the library, approximately once a week, to foster a love for reading and support fellow students.
- Act as ambassadors for reading by promoting and sharing the joy of reading with your peers, encouraging them to explore different genres and authors.
- Help maintain a clean and organised library space, ensuring books and materials are neatly arranged.
Playground Pals
Our Playground Pal leadership team includes students from Year 1 through to Year 6. Our Playground Pal initiative works to identify student potential in the social-emotional domain and develop leadership skills within our students.
Students in Year Six can self-nominate for this esteemed role, showcasing their commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive playground environment. Meanwhile, students in Years 1 through 5 will be nominated by their peers and teachers. This initiative allows us to tap into the social-emotional potential of a broader range of students, recognising their abilities to create a welcoming and connected school atmosphere.
Responsibilities
- Assist in setting up and organising playground games, activities, and equipment in designated play areas, ensuring students have engaging options during fruit break and lunch.
- Extend a helping hand to younger students by guiding and supporting them during playtime, promoting a sense of inclusion and safety.
- Act as mediators in playground conflicts, helping to find amicable solutions and encouraging positive communication among students.
- Foster an environment where everyone feels included and connected by actively promoting friendships, ensuring that no one is left out during playtime.
- Organise and lead initiative playground games or activities, such as friendship bracelet making or colouring sessions, to encourage creativity, social interaction, and fun among students.
Student Representative Council
Students in Years 1 – 5 can self-nominate to be a class representative for the Student Representative Council (SRC). Kindergarten representatives will be voted in during Semester Two. SRC representative positions are held for the semester with a new election occurring at the beginning of Term One and Term Three. Each class will vote for two representatives to voice their suggestions and ideas at fortnightly SRC meetings.
Responsibilities
- Attend fortnightly SRC meetings to discuss school-related matters, share ideas, and make decisions on initiatives.
- Collaborate with fellow SRC members to brainstorm, plan, and propose initiatives aimed at supporting and strengthening the school community.
- Act as a representative voice for their class, bringing forward ideas, concerns, and suggestions from classmates to SRC meetings for consideration.
- Participate in organising and promoting local and global charitable activities or initiatives endorsed by the SRC, fostering a culture of giving and community involvement.
Environmental Monitors
Students from Years K–6 are encouraged to self-nominate for the role of Environmental Monitor for their class. Each class will vote for two representatives for their class. These students should be passionate about enhancing our school environment and be keen to advocate for actions that promote environmental sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Attend regular meetings to discuss recycling initiatives, share ideas, and make decisions on environmental projects.
- Collaborate with classmates to promote recycling efforts, educating peers on proper disposal methods and the importance of sustainability.
- Monitor light and water usage in the classroom, tracking resource consumption and encouraging responsible use.
- Assist in the maintenance of our fruit and vegetable garden by participating in planting, watering, and harvesting activities.
Code of Conduct
Any student leader who, on several occasions, does not comply with class and/or school rules, who does not attend meetings without good reason or for other exceptional circumstances, or who engages in behaviour contrary to the values and expectations of Bonnet Bay Public School, may have their leadership position rescinded.
We believe in upholding the highest standards of conduct and dedication in our student leaders. To reinforce this commitment, each student leader will be required to sign a Code of Conduct, witnessed by their parents or guardians. This important step ensures that all student leaders pledge to uphold the school's values and principles.
We view student leadership as an opportunity for personal growth and positive influence. It is essential that our student leaders exemplify the values of care, respect and responsibility.
