What we offer

Each school in NSW offers something slightly different depending on the community. Here's what we offer for you.

Enrichment

In our Years 3-6 classes, we offer weekly mathematics enrichment sessions designed to challenge students with open- ended problems and mathematical investigations. These sessions help students develop advanced problem-solving skills, such as working backwards and using guess, check, and refine strategies.  Students collaborate to discuss and share strategies, enhancing their understanding and problem-solving abilities.

Additionally, our Stage Three students in the mathematics enrichment group participate in the Mathematics Olympiad, where they can further develop their creative problem-solving skills.  This primary school competition allows our teams to compete against other schools and students from across Australia and New Zealand.

Debating

Bonnet Bay Public School provides the opportunity for Stage 3 students to further develop their oral language and communication skills through our debating program.  Students are coached in all aspects of debating, including planning, rebutting and delivering persuasive closing statements.  Each year, we have selected teams representing our school in the highly competitive Premier's Debating Challenge, and in recent years have hosted The Department of Education Arts Unit Debating Workshops at our school.

School Captains and Vice Captains

Our School Captains and Vice Captains, who are Year 6 students elected by their peers, play a pivotal role in representing the school community.  In addition to leading assemblies, welcoming special guests, and chairing Student Representative Council (SRC) meetings, they serve as role models, embodying the core values of care, responsibility and respect.

Our Captains and Vice Captains are actively involved in various school programs and initiatives.  They support our Playground Pals, collaorate closely with teachers to coordinate events and lead a range of activities throughout the school.

Through their roles, they develop essential leadership skills such as organisation, public speaking, responsibility, teamwork and problem-solving.  They contiribute significantly to a positive and engaged school environment.

Sport Captains

Our Sports Captains represent our four sporting houses: Red Rosellas, Blue Kookaburras, Green Lorikeets and Yellow Cockatoos.  They are advocates for sportsmanship and active participation, encouraging their teams throughout various sporting carnivals and events throughout the year.

In addition to promoting teamwork and active involvement, our Sports Captains play a cruicial role in contributing to whole-school sporting events.  They are also responsible for managing sporting equipment, ensuring everything is organised and ready for use and assist teachers to coordinate events.

SRC

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) is composed of two students from each class, from Kindergarten through Year 6. Elected by their peers each semester, these reprsentatives meet every fortnight to discuss and brainsorm ideas aimed at enhancing the student experience at our school.

The SRC plays a key role in organising various initiatives, such as fundraising for a new bike rack, hosting Easter colouring competitions, and running handball tournaments.  This year, we also collaborated with our Aboriginal elders to paint new totem poles for our Indigenous Garden.

In addition to focusing on school activities, the SRC extends its efforts to support local and national charities.  Through fundraising and community service, we foster the development of responsibility, empathy, compassion, and leadership skills amongst our students.

Playground Pals

Our school offers an amazing enrichment program for students from Year 1 to Year 6.  The Playground Pal program empowers peer and teacher nominated students to act as supportive guides during breaktimes on the playground, and in the library.  These students help to foster a positive and inclusive environment by assisting their peers with social interactions and emotional well-being.  Through this initiative, Playground Pals develop leadership skills and empathy while making a meaningful impact on their school community.

Garden Club

Our Garden Club is open to all age groups and is a great way for students to learn the skills of gardening and what is involved in growing our own food.  It promotes a love of nature and our natural world whilst providing students with hands on experience caring for and maintaining herb, fruit and vegetable gardens.  Students are involved in planting, weeding, watering, feeding, trimming and harvesting the plants.

Being part of a choir builds self-confidence and positivity and brings joy as they perform as part of  a group.

Canteen

All canteens in NSW public schools must meet certain requirements. These include providing more healthy food and drink options – to make the healthy choice an easy choice for students. Visit Healthy school canteens to learn more.

Canteen by The Phoenix Community Project

A local tender went out to the community and the Canteen Tender panel successfully chose a local non-for profit charity ‘The Phoenix Community Project’ to run the Bonnet Bay Public School canteen in 2024. They are a hybrid between a disability support service and youth centre that supports and assists young adults with a disability. Our canteen will have a supervisor each day with students who are working towards their Certificate III in hospitality. We are very excited in welcoming the team to Bonnet Bay Public School and providing an opportunity for these young adults in the community. Please see below their exciting new menu.

Uniforms

When students wear a school uniform, they feel included in our school community.

Students, teachers, parents and carers, as well as members of our local community helped develop our school uniform to make sure it:

  • meets the requirements of occupational health and safety, anti-discrimination and equal opportunity legislation

  • includes items that are affordable, comfortable and made from easy-care and easy-wear fabrics

  • is appropriate for the full range of school activities

  • is suitable for all body shapes.
